Hades

Supergiant Games was already known for their uniquely talented audio director/composer/one man band/voice actor Darren Korb before their last release became their best selling. In Hades they took the production quality up a notch by having 22.000 fully voiced lines of dialogue, where all characters have their own characteristic vocal processing applied that interlocks perfectly with their sprites and personalities. In this game you have a lot of optional dialogue that helps make the game world feel real, you can only talk to characters again after you die on another attempt at escaping the Greek underworld (it’s a rogue-lite, so death is part of the core gameplay loop). When certain conditions are met, Hades’ minstrel Orpheus starts making music again and the character in this clip responds to him playing again. I think this is a beautiful example of all these art media (sound, image, storytelling) combine to make something beautiful, even if it’s just for a completely “pointless” and optional interaction for the player to stumble upon.
