F.E.A.R.

Game Title: F.E.A.R.
Your name: Rhéna
Pretty or ugly: Good
Description: This is what I would consider good sound in a game. You can hear the echoing in the footsteps, which is great because it differs on what material the player is walking on. You can hear sounds getting louder or softer the closer or farther you get from the object making the sound. In short, there are no syncing issues

Monkey Island

Game Title: Monkey Island
Your name: Rhéna
Pretty or ugly: Bad but funny
Description: This is an excerpt from the game Monkey Island. I did not isolate parts of the clip, because the whole clip includes parts of the fault. But this fault makes the game funny to play. The reason: The images of the characters talking do not sync up with the lip movements. There are moments at 0:08 in the clip Guybrush is talking but his lips aren't moving. At 0:50 in a dialog between Guybrush and another pirate you can see that once again the lips don't match the voices. And finally at 2:05 a duel breaks out between Guybrush and this pirate. The sword sounds are out of sync and you can clearly see that you hear the two swords touching eachother while both Guybrush and the pirate have their swords distant from one another

Beasts and Bumpkins

Game Title: Beasts and Bumpkins
Your name: Bas Dabroek
Pretty or ugly: ugly
Description: I like the game but this music is very frustrating and ruining the game.

This shouldnt be music to hear when playing in game but maybe only for the credits page or something else nobody checks when playing this game.

I always played the game without music. there is no particular part that makes it very ugly. its just every part.

Forza Motorsport 2

Metal Gear Solid 4

Game Title: Metal Gear Solid 4
Your name: Jonathan Barbosa Dijkstra
Pretty or ugly: Pretty
Description: In this split-screen scene the music and volume of different sounds define how the player experience this moment. Due to lowering the volume of the upper half, the player is most likely to experience that part as a sort of vision, something the player regrettably has no control over. The sounds of the lower part are set louder so the player knows that this is the screen he is currently controlling. The music adds a lot of drama to the entire scene.

Super Mario Bros3

Game Title: Super Mario Bros3
Your name: Guus Hoeve
Pretty or ugly: Pretty
Description: Verything in this game just sounds great. The feedback through sound is just simply amazing. Just watch this video ones and try watching it again without watching. I bet you can exactly tell what's happening just by the sounds you hear. From accessing secret area's, one up's, jumping, flying, victory etc. It's all good and the sound really matches the visual style of the game and contributes to the overall experience.

Wii Fit (Aerobic Step Plus)

Game Title: Wii Fit (Aerobic Step Plus)
Your name: Andrea
Pretty or ugly: Ugly
Description: In this Wii fit game you need the music for your rhythm. But as soon as you take a step out of sync with the music rhythm the feedback sound is also played out of sync. This creates confusing situations when you try to get back in the rhythm.

Aion – Tower of Eternity

Game Title: Aion – Tower of Eternity
Your name: Jeffry van der Heul
Pretty or ugly: Ugly
Description: Here is a good example of not thinking things through in therms of gamedesign/audiodesign. This takes place in the armory on an MMORPG called Aion. Here you can upgrade your skills which can sometimes take you more then a good 30 mins.

The sounds themselves aren't that bad, but see what happens if you don't take the fact into account, that many people will be at the same spot, at the same time.

Half Life 1, break a leg

Game Title: Half Life 1, break a leg
Your name: Guus Hoeve
Pretty or ugly: Ugly
Description: Fast forward to exactly 3.00 minutes in this movie. This is exceptionally bad game audio. It tries to tell you that you suffered a great injury, but in the game it doesn't show. "major fracture detected". I would at least expect to walk slowly or something since I just dropped from a great hight. The feedback is good but comon, don't tell me I just broke my leg when I seem to be jumping and climbing with ease, albeit the suit.

Crash Bandicoot

Game Title: Crash Bandicoot
Your name: Andrea
Pretty or ugly: Pretty
Description: The pretty sound is the music that plays when you get the aku aku powerup (at 1:30 in the video).

I love this sound because it is energetic and positive and a good representation of the power up you get. A more clear sound (not in-game) is found here:
