Prince of Persia: Warrior Within

/>Game Title:
Your name: Eveline Albers
Pretty or ugly: Ugly
Description: 'Unfortunate you have fallen so easily'

A nice taunt. Were it not that the Crow master miniboss is still standing at the beginning of the room, while the prince is about to make it to the end without a single fight.

Taunt is time-triggered, and thus very much out of place.

Grand Theft Auto 4

Your name: Brian Smit
Pretty or ugly: Pretty
Description: This game's environmental sound is pretty awesome in my opinion it really makes the whole city come to life. And not only the sound of environment but also the sound of the guns, cars, choppers, alarms and voice acting is really well done in this game.

When your being chased by the police you can hear pretty clear how far away they are from you, and with how many they are just by listening to the sound of the alarms and the sound of the choppers.

Also the sound of the car when it's almost wrecked is pretty clear. That way you hear when you should steal another car as soon as possible and/or take it easy with the car you're driving at that time.

Heroes of Might and magic 5

Your name: D Harmsen
Pretty or ugly: Pretty
Description: I really like how every unit in the army has a soft and neutral default sound, that plays constantly, really giving you a connection with your army, because you hear individual units all the time. There are lots of sounds playing all the time without becoming intrusive at all. Also I enjoy that each unit has really unique sounds that are easy to identify for the player. You recognise which unit swung a sword, even though a lot of units use one. Also love the Cyclops's "I whack you with a tree" sound at 2.14. And the constant clinging of the tamborine the goblin shaman's use.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Your name: Paul Suurmeijer
Pretty or ugly: Pretty
Description: I believe that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is perfect example for a game that uses audio in a very pretty way.

For one, the audio always provides feedback for every action the player takes. Opening a chest has the same sound throughout the game. Making a special attack has the same sound and yell associated with it.

This provides clarity for the player and gives clear feedback about what is going on in the game.

Second, the game also features background music that does not interfere with this interaction sound. The background perfectly sets the tone for the area you are in and therefore delivers a perfect mood setting ambiance.

In conclusion, I feel Ocarina of Time an example of perfect audio design because it combines the two elements of audio design in games perfectly.

Mass Effect

Your name: Bram
Pretty or ugly: Pretty
Description: Watch this clip from 1:34. Great sound effects, with lots of attention to detail (guns unfolding etc.) Most notably a very memorable soundscore that is used consistently throughout the game, functioning as both a backdrop and cue as to when the game needs you to focus for a fight.

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures

Your name: Bram
Pretty or ugly: Ugly
Description: Watch from 1:16 to 1:32. For anyone who has played this game, for some reason all people sound russian in this game. On top of that, the voice acting is downright terrible, and was only done for the first few chapters of the game.

F.E.A.R.

Game Title: F.E.A.R.
Pretty or ugly: Pretty
Description: This is not really "pretty" game audio, but I think it is very good. The sound contributes to the general atmosphere created in the game. It makes the player feel real uncomfortable and fits perfectly in the paranormal theme. They also did a good job on the way the sound deforms when slow-mo is activated.

Operation Wolf (NES port)

Your name: Joost Blom
Pretty or ugly: (F)ugly!
Description: Operation Wolf finds it's roots somewhere in the late 80′s, starting off as an arcade game. Like so many other arcade games from that era Wolf was played by aiming a lightgun at the screen and pulling the trigger. The game would have a moderate range of sound effects, mostly consisting of gunshots, ricocheting bullets and explosions. Sound tracks of decent quality were present, but would only be played while the main menu and level selection screen were displayed.

However in 1989 Operation Wolf was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), but unlike it's predecessor the NES port would only know a tiny range of sounds. The crackling and clicking sounds the port offered were not at all reminiscent of the gunshots and explosions of the original arcade version. To make things worse a very annoying and hard-to-ignore 'beep' would repeat itself several times every second when the player was low on health!

Still Operation Wolf was a great title and unlike many other arcade games of it's time Wolf would follow an actual storyline throughout the entire game. The NES port however, even if being very entertaining, offered terrible sound. This makes Operation Wolf (on the NES) ugly!

Kirby’s Adventure (NES)

Your name: Joost Blom
Pretty or ugly: Pretty
Description: It was 1993 and there came Kirby! Our pink inflatable made his debut earlier in 1992 on the gameboy and now would finally entertain us further on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). As never seen before Kirby could ingest his enemies to gain their skills and would then put these skills to good use to defeat or gobble up even more enemies!

But what also sets Kirby aside from many other NES titles is having some excellent and advanced sound effects. When inhaling, a hoovering sound would be heard, increasing in pitch if Kirby would keep inhaling for several seconds. Many other sound effects such as entering a door for example would make great use of fading out the sound effect. The music heard in Kirby's Adventure was of great quality and added to the experience of this game.

Great sound effects and fantastic music (that is, for the 8-bit era) make me rate the Kirby's Adventure as pretty.

Castle Crashers

Your name: D.Harmsen
Pretty or ugly: Ugly
Description: I love the game, but the constant "swooshswoohswoosh" drives me completelly insane. It ruines the background music as well. No that that is awsome inspiring music, but this is just to much random chaos. And the "oh help!" sound the princess makes at the start sounds very sampled and makes my toes curl.
