Oblivion

Description: This is an example of having a bad asset in your game. In this case, they didn't notice that this sample wasn't meant to be in the game. You can clearly hear the voice actress say: "wait a minute, let me do that one again".

This clearly takes a whole lot away from the experience, errors like this make you feel like you're actually in something that has been "created", you no longer feel emerged in the universe. Which is a shame, in my opinion.

Oblivion is a large game with many content, however, that is not an excuse for letting such an error to slip by. They should have spent a bit more time in going through all the sounds before they released the game!

Syndicate Wars

Game Title: Syndicate Wars

Description: The game is set in a futuristic city. The ambience is very dark and hostile. You feel like danger is around every corner and you always feel unsafe. Not only do the visuals add to this, but also the music and sound effects.

The music itself is very eery and sounds minimal. Not many instruments are played and the progression in the songs is slow. This really helps the ambience and the feel of the game. The music is very well made!

The sound effects from the guns and other things (like explosions and vehicles) are in good quality, especially considering it’s an old game. The guns (sadly not all) sound genuine and believable. The screams and grunts from the characters also sound real. All in all: they just do a good job helping the experience of the game.

Opzich lijkt de sound design hier vrijwel allemaal goed te kloppen, al mis ik een groot ding (ook uit te voeren in visuals though):

Je merkt pas dat je tijd op is in de eerste 2 stukjes van het level wanneer het ook echt zo is. Hierdoor moet ik steeds kijken naar de tijd en of ik nog tijd heb om te kunnen schieten.

Dit merk je wel aan het eind van het level, maar dus niet tussen de scenes. Dit hadden ze goed op kunnen lossen door het geluidje iets eerder af te spelen..

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within

A nice taunt. Were it not that the Crow master miniboss is still standing at the beginning of the room, while the prince is about to make it to the end without a single fight.

Taunt is time-triggered, and thus very much out of place.

Grand Theft Auto 4

Description: This game's environmental sound is pretty awesome in my opinion it really makes the whole city come to life. And not only the sound of environment but also the sound of the guns, cars, choppers, alarms and voice acting is really well done in this game.

When your being chased by the police you can hear pretty clear how far away they are from you, and with how many they are just by listening to the sound of the alarms and the sound of the choppers.

Also the sound of the car when it's almost wrecked is pretty clear. That way you hear when you should steal another car as soon as possible and/or take it easy with the car you're driving at that time.

Heroes of Might and magic 5

Description: I really like how every unit in the army has a soft and neutral default sound, that plays constantly, really giving you a connection with your army, because you hear individual units all the time. There are lots of sounds playing all the time without becoming intrusive at all. Also I enjoy that each unit has really unique sounds that are easy to identify for the player. You recognise which unit swung a sword, even though a lot of units use one. Also love the Cyclops's "I whack you with a tree" sound at 2.14. And the constant clinging of the tamborine the goblin shaman's use.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Description: I believe that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is perfect example for a game that uses audio in a very pretty way.

For one, the audio always provides feedback for every action the player takes. Opening a chest has the same sound throughout the game. Making a special attack has the same sound and yell associated with it.

This provides clarity for the player and gives clear feedback about what is going on in the game.

Second, the game also features background music that does not interfere with this interaction sound. The background perfectly sets the tone for the area you are in and therefore delivers a perfect mood setting ambiance.

In conclusion, I feel Ocarina of Time an example of perfect audio design because it combines the two elements of audio design in games perfectly.

Description: Watch this clip from 1:34. Great sound effects, with lots of attention to detail (guns unfolding etc.) Most notably a very memorable soundscore that is used consistently throughout the game, functioning as both a backdrop and cue as to when the game needs you to focus for a fight.

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures

Description: Watch from 1:16 to 1:32. For anyone who has played this game, for some reason all people sound russian in this game. On top of that, the voice acting is downright terrible, and was only done for the first few chapters of the game.
